07.06.2010 - Women’s Country Quota Matches Launch Play at Grand Slam presented by SEAT

Moscow, Russia, June 7, 2010 – International Beach Volleyball competition returned to the Russia capital for the third-straight year here Monday as women’s teams from Germany, The Netherlands and the United States opened play on a Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) side court at the US$600,000 Grand Slam presented by SEAT.

Advancing from Monday’s opening competition at the Grand Slam presented by SEAT were the teams of Rieke Brink-Abeler/Angelina Grun of Germany, Merel Mooren/Margo Wiltens of The Netherlands and Brooke Hanson/Lisa Rutledge of the United States.

While Mooren/Wiltens (1-1 CQ record) and Hanson/Rutledge (2-0) were playing in their second Country Quota this season, Brink-Abeler/Grun advanced from the preliminary rounds to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour Qualification Tournament for the first-time in four attempts this season as their record improved to 4-3.

“This is fantastic,” said the 30-year old Grun, a nine-time German Volleyball player-of-the-year and two-time Olympian (Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004).  “This is my first year of playing Beach Volleyball internationally, so today’s two wins will be very memorable for me.”

Competition on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar for both men and women resumes this week after a weekend off with the planet’s top players last competing internationally at events in Korea and Poland where pairs from Brazil and the United States captured the gold medals.

With three German teams along with two pairs each for The Netherlands and the United States playing Monday in the fifth of 15 women’s events on this season’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour schedule, the Country Quota matches helped finalize the field for women’s qualifier Tuesday that will determine the 32-team lineup for Wednesday’s opening Main Draw pool play rounds.

The Grand Slam presented by SEAT, which will be part of the country’s Russian Day observance this weekend, will also stage men’s Country Quota playoff matches Tuesday with a qualifier Wednesday and the first set of pool play matches Thursday.  After the pool play rounds, 24 teams from each gender will advance to single-elimination bracket competition starting Friday for women and Saturday for men.

The women’s semi-final and medal matches will be played Sunday followed Monday by the men’s “final four” matches on the Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) center court.  The winning women’s and men’s teams will each share the $43,500 first-place prizes in the second of six “major” events on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour where $3.6-million of the circuit’s total $6.83-million in prize money will be distributed at Grand Slam events.

Host Russia has already placed three teams in the Main Draw, including Maria Bratkova/Evgenia Ukolova, Ekaterina Khomyakova/Anastasia Vasina and Judith Flores Yalovaya/Yana Kiseleva.  Bratkova and Ukolova became the first Russian women’s team to medal on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour with a third-place last November in Phuket, Thailand.

The teams of Viktoria Rastykus/Daria Yarzutkina and Natalia Stepanova/Anna Vozakova have already been placed in the women’s Qualification with the pairs of Anna Alova/Alevtina Nemtseva, Viktoria Biryukova/Ksenia Petrova, Yulia Abalakina/Elizaveta Ryabova, Ksenia Sukhareva/Maria Ushkova and Anna Markova/Yulia Voronko awaiting confirmation if a current qualifying team withdraws from the competition.

The defending women’s champions for the Moscow Grand Slam stop are Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca, who set a SWATCH FIVB World Tour single-season mark for men and women with eight titles last year enroute to winning their fourth circuit championship in the last five years.

After the Grand Slam presented by SEAT, the 2010 women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour takes a two-week break before resuming play in Norway for the $600,000 ConocoPhillips Grand Slam in Stavanger.  The men will have a week’s break before competing in the Czech Republic June 15-20 at Prague.
