21.06.2012 - Olympic wind blows in Moscow, Continental Cup final coming up this weekend

Moscow, Russia, June 21, 2012. Starting from Friday players from 8 countries will be competing in the final stage of the CEV Continental Cup – Women at “Poklonnaya Gora” in Russia’s capital city, the ultimate goal being the fulfillment of their Olympic dream. Only the country coming out on top of the charts will get the right to qualify one pair for the London Olympics scheduled for late July through early August.
“We are very pleased to stage the final of the Continental Cup here in Moscow. I would like to thank the local promoter as well as the Russian Volleyball Federation for their work; we all know that Ilya Volodarskiy and his team are capable of doing great things for this sport. The tournament will be really thrilling especially as the players are all trying to make their dream of being an Olympian turn into reality” said CEV Vice President and Jury President Jan Hronek while addressing the Russian media on Thursday morning.

“I really feel honored to be here as CEV Supervisor, we all have some great memories from previous tournaments, such as the FIVB Grand Slam but here you can feel something special in the air as a ticket to the Olympics will be at stake this weekend” added CEV Supervisor Michel Everaert. “The tournament will be tough for everyone, players and referees, since there is that much at stake. The Continental Cup is an excellent opportunity whereby young teams can qualify to the Olympics” he stressed.

Tournament Director Ilya Volodarskiy thanked all sponsors and partners for their support as well as the CEV for choosing Russia and the city of Moscow as venue of this final. He also recalled that the teams finishing second and third this weekend will stay in Moscow to try to exploit their last chance to make it to London 2012 via the FIVB World Olympic Qualification Tournament scheduled for June 28-July 1 at “Vodniy Stadium”.

The competition will start on Friday with the 1/4 finals, where the Netherlands play Great Britain, Italy takes on Spain, Switzerland is challenged by Greece and the home heroines of Russia go for a demanding opening test against Austria.
